  • Are concerned about a loved one's safety as a driver

  • Know someone recently disabled who is unsure if they should still drive

  • Need confidential advice about state driving laws

What is Driving Solutions about?

It's about determining the safety of a driver in a comprehensive, personalized, objective manner.

Occupational therapists believe that ...

You
should drive for as long as you are safe to do so

Who needs Driving Solutions?

Anyone  in Massachusetts who has an impairment of movement, strength, coordination, vision or thinking should have an evaluation by an occupational therapist  who is experienced in driver evaluation

Why should I do that if I have a valid drivers license?

  • Because Massachusetts is a self-reporting state regarding medical conditions
  • Each driver is responsible for their own safety and liability as a driver
  • To get an objective, informed and third party decision  about a divisive family issue
  • To get the latest in resource information from national and state agencies concerned about driving safety.

Typically a family member or a medical professional will raise the question about driver safety when someone is having trouble performing  activities of daily living, or during recovery from illness.

Any
person with a medical condition or a learning, developmental, emotional or age related disorder is a candidate for driver evaluation.

An MD order for an OT Driver Evaluation is required...Why?

Because  physicians are aware of driving as a medical issue. They have a  professional responsibility for  individual as well as public safety.  For more detailed info go to www.ama-assn.org

Because occupational therapists have the right combination of medical background and functional performance training to evaluate the skill of driving.  See www.aota.org for more information and to access the Older Driver Initiative mini-site.
